Mifflin County’s Ty Small clears the bar in the pole vault Thursday in Lewistown.

LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County’s boys and girls track and field teams both fell to Cumberland Valley during a Mid-Penn Conference track and field meet Thursday afternoon. And although the Huskies knew the Eagles were going to be a tough opponent, they still set out to achieve their goals.

“Coming in to this, Cumberland Valley you know that they are one of the premier teams in the league,” Huskies coach Scott Gantz said. “We talked to our kids last night, established some goals and kids worked toward achieving those goals tonight.

“It was a good effort by everybody,” Gantz continued. “Not prime conditions to be out here running here, we are at the end of April almost the beginning of May and we’re (temperature-wise) in the 40s maybe pushing 30s now. We do what we can do, the kids gave us great effort tonight.”

For the boys, the Huskies were defeated by the Eagles by the final score of 99-51. Mifflin County placed first in different six events with Josiah Sechler winning two events starting with the 100 dash in 11.32 seconds. Then Sechler finished first again this time in the javelin event throwing it 166 feet and a quarter inch.

Jayden King also won two events for the afternoon for the Huskies as well starting with the long jump event reaching 20 feet, 9 inches. King later placed first in the triple jump going 41-6 1/4. In fact, the Huskies swept in both the triple and long jump events with Dillon Wert coming in second and Caden Kauffman placing third during the triple jump. In the long jump Wert finished second and Reagan Ettinger came in third.

Kauffman also finished in first place in the high jump clearing 5-10. Christopher Royer also had a first place finish in the 1,600-meter run at the time of 4:40.70.

“Our jumpers have been strong all year,” Gantz said. “Dillon Wert, Caden Kauffman, Josiah Sechler just the whole crew you know they carried the load and whenever we go to a meet, we know we can count on those guys.”

On the girls side of the meet, Cumberland Valley came out victorious over Mifflin County by the score of 128-22.

The Huskies had three first place finishes during the meet with Kylee Cubbison winning two of those events.

Cubbison got the ball rolling in the 800-meter run, finishing the event at the time of 2:22.47. Cubbison also placed first in the 1,600 with a time of 5:09.76.

The other first place finish came from Lily Yoder who hit 16-3 in the long jump. Yoder also came in second in the triple jump.

Gantz was also excited to see other athletes place in the top three as well including Morgan Breon who finished third in the 100-meter hurdles. Lyza Underhill finished third in the 100-meter dash, Rosalyn Lansberry came in third in the 3,200 and Tai Ematat found herself in the top three in the pole vault.

“Girls — not a lot of points. Cumberland Valley, like I said, is tough but you know our girls hung with them,” Gantz said. “Once again Lily Yoder — good meet. Kylee Cubbison — good meet — just the ones who have been able to dominate for us in the past are the ones who had a great meet for us tonight.

“Not to say the young girls aren’t coming on. We have a lot of new faces this year and every meet is a new experience for them,” Gantz continued. “Personal records across the board, that’s what we strive for and I know that a lot of girls that were happy tonight, so I’m assuming a lot of them achieved PRs this evening.”

Mifflin County hosts Harrisburg for a Tuesday dual meet.
