PALM BAY — A fire at a Palm Bay apartment complex early Saturday morning left 16 units damaged and displaced 33 people, fire officials said. By Sunday, the area surrounding the two-story concrete unit marked “24” had been roped off.
Palm Bay Fire Department crews were called to The Braxton, an apartment complex on Palm Place Drive North East, just off of Babcock Street, at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday after a report of a unit on fire, said Lt. John Ringleb.
All occupants of the building escaped without injury, including their pets. A portion of the roof had a gaping, charred hole where the flames were seen. A slight burning smell was still detectable Sunday.

The fire, smoke or water caused damage to 16 units, displacing 31 adults, two children and nine pets. The Red Cross had found shelter for 16 of the 33 people as of Saturday afternoon, Ringleb said. No further information on relocations was available Sunday.
Management for the complex could not be reached Sunday. The complex has more than 300 units and was constructed in 1987, according to information from the apartment community’s website.
The Melbourne Fire Department and Brevard County Fire Rescue assisted Palm Bay in tackling the fire. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal.
